The Pearl & Al Bidda Park

The last day that Mom was here, January 3rd, we went to the Pearl and Al Bidda Park along the Corniche.

The Pearl is reclaimed land from what was once Qatar's booming Pearl industry.  It is currently the only place available for foreign nationals (expats) to own land.  Once completed, at the hefty price tag of $15 billion,  it will create 32 kilometers of new coastline!

It's a little hard to see but the wooden boat in the middle of the picture is called a dhow boat, or a traditional fishing boat.  You can rent them out for a 4 hour cruise around the bay and bring your own food and drinks.  Definitely something we hope to do while we're here.

Of course, a lot of the huge yachts are docked here as well

Nothing like a little Haagen Dazs ice cream before lunch!  Since it was Friday, most all of the shops and restaurants were closed in observation of their prayer time.  They open at 1:00 once prayer is finished.  So after ice cream we ate lunch at a place called Elevation Burger.  Delicious burgers from grass fed beef!  My Dad would be so proud!
I'm sure Eric would LOVE to trade in the mini van for this Ferrari!

A girl after my own heart! We love ice cream!
The large circular building with the diamond shapes is called Tornado Tower in West Bay.  It's 640 feet tall with 52 floors.  There are offices, apartments, entertaining space and a restaurant! It is definitely one of the iconic buildings of Doha.

It was an absolutely perfect day to check out Al Bidda park

It also gave us some spectacular views of West Bay
Since it was Friday, which is the first day of the weekend over here, there were tons of families gathered on blankets, playing, eating, and relaxing.
